I Searched for Earthquake Info. Siri Sent Me to a Website Last Updated in 2019.

Tonight, I felt an earthquake and wanted to learn more about it. So, I opened Safari and searched for “Bay Area Earthquake.” Siri suggested a website, which I clicked on.

I expected real-time data, but what I got was a seismic tracker that hadn’t been updated in nearly six years.

Lately, Apple’s AI efforts have faced plenty of criticism, but this highlights an even deeper issue—they’re struggling with the basics. Industry leaders mastered search and real-time information retrieval decades ago, yet Apple still fails to return relevant results for simple queries.

As AI and large language models redefine how we access knowledge, the next wave of consumer AI will require systems that deliver accurate, thoughtful, and context-aware responses. If Apple is already this far behind on foundational tech, competing with AI-first companies—moving at an unprecedented pace—will be an uphill battle.

Something drastic needs to change.
