Apple in Talks to License Google Gemini for iPhone, iOS 18 Generative AI Tools - Bloomberg
The two companies are in active negotiations to let Apple license Gemini, Google’s set of generative AI models, to power some new features coming to the iPhone software this year
Spicy rumor! It's easy to speculate that this is being driven by Apple being behind the leaders in genAI capabilities. I assume Apple has observed Microsoft's strategic investments and see the value in following a similar path. With users likely to explore billions of different use cases on their devices, Apple could face increased regulatory attention from anything they launch using AI. It's possible that Apple aims to profit from this platform as they enhance their genAI features, potentially securing a lucrative new multi-year agreement in spaces they are not motivated to enter (yet) like search. But, who knows! Buttering my popcorn.
Nvidia, more valuable than Google and Amazon
It’s not just that their customers want to make some of the money that Nvidia has been raking in — it’s that they can’t afford to keep paying so much. Microsoft “went from spending less than 10 percent of their capital expenditure on Nvidia to spending nearly 40 percent,” Luria says. “That’s not sustainable.”
That is serious money. One must assume MSFT and others are investing in alternative solutions.

DSPy from Stanford NLP
DSPy is a framework for algorithmically optimizing LM prompts and weights, especially when LMs are used one or more times within a pipeline. To use LMs to build a complex system without DSPy, you generally have to: (1) break the problem down into steps, (2) prompt your LM well until each step works well in isolation, (3) tweak the steps to work well together, (4) generate synthetic examples to tune each step, and (5) use these examples to finetune smaller LMs to cut costs. Currently, this is hard and messy: every time you change your pipeline, your LM, or your data, all prompts (or finetuning steps) may need to change.
