Spicy rumor! It's easy to speculate that this is being driven by Apple being behind the leaders in genAI capabilities. I assume Apple has observed Microsoft's strategic investments and see the value in following a similar path. With users likely to explore billions of different use cases on their devices, Apple could face increased regulatory attention from anything they launch using AI. It's possible that Apple aims to profit from this platform as they enhance their genAI features, potentially securing a lucrative new multi-year agreement in spaces they are not motivated to enter (yet) like search. But, who knows! Buttering my popcorn.

It’s not just that their customers want to make some of the money that Nvidia has been raking in — it’s that they can’t afford to keep paying so much. That is serious money. One must assume MSFT and others are investing in alternative solutions.
