Recipe for Breakfast Meditation

Early in life, I discovered meditation. I was seeking a way to foster a peaceful inner state. When I practice regularly, I experience a calmness and stillness that helps anchor me in the present. Lately, I have been practicing Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) meditation on a daily basis.

When time permits I like to make steel-cut Irish Oats for breakfast. Stovetop cooking time is about 17 minutes. A perfect window to start my day with a 15 minute meditation. Here’s a recipe I follow using the cooking time for a guided meditation:

  1. In a small saucepan, bring 1.5 cups salted water to a boil on high heat
  2. Add 1/2 cup fresh steel-cut Irish Oat and reduce the heat to low
  3. In a quiet room, on a carpet or thick mat, lay down and follow Mark William’s 15 minute body scan
  4. When the meditation ends it will be time to transfer the oats to a bowl adding butter, fruit and/or additional salt to taste
